INTRODUCTION

Creative professionals increasingly find themselves navigating complex challenges that cross institutional, disciplinary, and cultural boundaries. These challenges—whether related to sustainability, digitalisation, or public trust—cannot be solved by one sector alone. They require the ability to connect different perspectives, align divergent interests, and co-create new pathways forward. This is where boundary spanning becomes essential.

Boundary spanning is the capacity to work across domains that do not typically operate in coordination. It involves initiating conversations, building relationships, and maintaining cooperation between actors who may not usually work together. The boundary spanner recognises that knowledge, needs, and ways of working differ—and that innovation often arises in the space between them. This competence requires both strategic awareness and a high degree of sensitivity to context and people.

In the creative industries, boundary spanning often emerges through the roles artists and cultural practitioners take on beyond their traditional practice. A musician might coordinate a cross-disciplinary performance on urban ecology, working with scientists and policy advisors. A designer might moderate a conversation between local government and youth collectives to imagine future public spaces. These roles involve more than artistic vision—they demand coordination, translation, and negotiation between different logics and expectations.

This learning plan introduces boundary spanning as a public agency competence and supports trainers in exploring its relevance and practice. It offers a set of conceptual anchors, practical methods, and learning tools that help creative professionals develop this capacity within their existing roles. Rather than adding something new, it helps name and build on what many are already doing—bringing people together to make something possible that none of them could do alone.
