<p>Rather than prescribing a fixed approach, CYANOTYPES offers starting points that trainers can build on to design their own sessions. The methods suggested here are flexible and can be adapted to fit different learners, professional contexts, and available resources. The focus is on hands-on learning, discussion, and reflection—ensuring that learners develop skills they can apply in real-world creative and digital environments.</p>
<p>A useful entry point into boundary spanning practice is stakeholder mapping. This method invites learners to identify key players, understand their roles, and visualise relationships across a given system. Mapping these dynamics helps make visible not only formal structures but also informal networks and tacit power hierarchies. Many collaborative processes falter because these aspects remain hidden. By learning to ‘read’ the social landscape—including hidden influencers and informal alliances—participants can better anticipate friction points and identify opportunities for engagement. A completed stakeholder map can also serve as a boundary object: something tangible to present to others to support alignment, understanding, or negotiation.</p>
<p>Trainers can also introduce the use of creative boundary objects. This involves encouraging learners to draw on their existing artistic or design practices to create material artefacts that help bridge gaps between stakeholders. Whether it’s using sculpture to stimulate local dialogue or photographs to visualise potential futures, creative interventions can act as shared reference points that prompt deeper reflection and understanding. Many creative professionals already have the tools to do this work but may not recognise its strategic or transformative potential. A guiding question for sessions might be: “How might your artistic practice become a vehicle for shared decision-making or future imagining with others?”</p>
<p>Narrative framing offers another entry into boundary spanning. Learners can practice turning complex problem spaces into compelling stories that resonate with different audiences. The same facts can be narrated through metaphors, logic-driven arguments, or emotionally charged testimonials. This flexibility is central to navigating contested terrains and is further explored in the CYANOTYPES Narrative Design learning plan.</p>
<p>Because boundary spanning is fundamentally experiential, it is best developed through immersion. Simulated scenarios have limited reach; deeper insight arises when learners are involved in ongoing, real-world collaborations. For this reason, we suggest designing extended assignments—what might be called “slow-burn” projects. These multi-week collaborations expose participants to the actual friction, slowdowns, and shifting alliances that typify cross-sector work. Instead of resolving all tensions, learners practice staying with complexity, adapting their approach, and making sense of evolving dynamics through reflection and dialogue.</p>
