<p>This second workshop is aimed at getting to know yourself as a creative boundary spanner. You learn the various roles you might have to perform as a creative boundary spanner. You assess your personal relationship regarding these roles, their strengths (through the identification of leverage skills) and from what roles you could benefit in terms of professional development or outsourcing them to someone else. You also get to know and practice different ways of making these roles actionable; what are the skills and actions to be able to get more out of different roles and/ or work more from your strengths as a creative boundary spanner.</p>

<p><strong>Challenge #4 (105-240 min.); leverage skills</strong></p>
<p>Narrative: talents and leveraging skills</p>
<p>Everyone has certain talents, including in creative boundary spanning. These are the skills and roles you excel at and can quickly find meaning in. Naturally, everyone also has areas for development—roles that don't suit them well or situations that don't align with their strengths. You can take control by shaping contexts or adjusting your actions to leverage your talents more effectively.</p>
<p>Leveraging skills enhance the productivity of a talent in a specific context and prevent the pitfalls of overusing it. For example, a highly creative person might flood a discussion with ideas prematurely, which may not suit the situation's needs. Here, <strong>a leveraging skill could be active listening and summarising before introducing new ideas</strong>. Similarly, someone with a strong sense of responsibility is reliable but may struggle with taking on too much. For them, a <strong>leveraging skill might be requesting time to think before agreeing to new tasks</strong>.</p>
<p>Working from your talents seems straightforward—just do what you're good at. However, it doesn't mean ignoring your weaknesses. Knowing your talents also means taking responsibility for the outcomes of your weaknesses without striving to develop the underlying skill. This might involve seeking help or distributing tasks according to individual strengths. True responsibility for your weaknesses begins with accepting them, which many find challenging.</p>
<p>The line of reasoning is thus: to become a better, more resilient maker/designer in these contexts, you can learn or expand your skills repertoire from the other ‘roles’ by identifying leverage skills. Each role represents a skillset. As an example, a detective has the ability to search, find, deduct, unravel, compose an overall picture, reason, etc. Each one of these skills could be a “leverage skill” for you as described above.</p>
<p></p>
<p><strong>Design your experiment</strong>.</p>
<p>Choose two roles, not being the maker role, which you expect to carry possible leverage skills to foster your strength as a maker. (Choose from the roles you have rated less than good.)<br />In conversation with another participant, you explore what skill each of these roles could offer you as leverage skill.</p>
<p></p>
<p>Step 1. Choose a role for inspiration<br />Step 2. Discuss what particular skills or actions this role archetypically performs or undertakes, and how which of these could possible act as leverage skills for your own professional performance. </p>
<p></p>
<p>Now think of an experiment that you can conduct in the time between this session and next session to practice these two ‘leverage skills’ in a real-life context. </p>
<p><em>Example</em>: as a maker, your first contact with a stakeholder is very information-intensive and not long enough to build trust. You choose ‘the Detective’. As mentioned, a detective has the ability to search, find, deduct, unravel, compose an overall picture, reason. You decide to use some of these skills to prepare for your next meeting with a new stakeholder. Through desk research, you learn about that person, their role in the organisation; current priorities in that organisation, policy priorities… </p>
<p></p>
<p>Your experiment is to apply this strategy for the next ‘first stakeholder meeting’ and investigate the impact of this preparation on your ability to excel as a maker.</p>
