<p>Reflexive practice cultivates the ability to question one’s assumptions, recognize patterns of behavior, and engage with complexity from multiple perspectives. It involves both self-reflection and collective inquiry, not merely as afterthoughts, but as integral modes of learning and transformation.</p>

<p>One powerful approach to deepening reflexivity is through distancing and de-familiarisation, inspired by the theatre practitioner Bertolt Brecht. Brecht’s Verfremdungseffekt (“alienation effect”) sought to interrupt the audience’s passive identification with the familiar, encouraging critical detachment and re-evaluation. In the context of collective learning, it encourages critical questioning: What assumptions are we holding? Whose voices are missing? What are we not seeing?</p>
<p>Practical applications:</p>
<p>Role-switching: Have participants take on the role of a stakeholder with an opposing view, or observe their own meeting dynamics as an outsider.</p>
<p>Re-narration: Ask learners to re-tell a familiar story (project, challenge, policy) as if they were explaining it to someone from a radically different context.</p>
<p>Reverse design briefs: Invite learners to deconstruct a well-known initiative and reframe its assumptions from a new or critical perspective.</p>

Participants engage the material not as consumers of meaning but as producers of new questions and possibilities. Pre-Texts are especially effective for defamiliarizing complex social issues and enabling divergent perspectives to surface.</p>

<p>Example: Using The Earthquake in Chile, participants could rewrite the ending collectively, imagining what forms of collective solidarity could have prevented the mob violence, or perform a "trial of the city" where institutions are questioned by citizens. </p>
