The intention of decolonising film studies is to draw attention to and resist dominant colonial and stereotypical narratives projected through film, its making and content. Decolonising film studies, according to Natalia Keogan, is a concerted effort to step outside the confines of established canons, such as were talked about in module 2. Films address vast amounts of topics like race, gender, emotions, and participants should be able to interpret them beyond the recommendations of established canons.

Have you ever watched or read a film and wondered about the portrayal or representation of a certain character or event or emotion by someone else other than the character affected? Did you think the portrayal could have been manipulated for some reason like entertainment, cultural misrepresentations, stereotype, ridicule or something else? A research by Richard Jenkins, shows that audiences often feel misrepresented on the screen, and another by Lauren Washington, highlights the relevance of representation in film. But what does it really matter who is portrayed, how they are shown and whose voice is heard?
