Barry Keith Grant has argued that genre films rely on “generic shorthand” (2007: 8), using existing archetypes, standards and preconceptions in order to simplify character development and advance a film’s narrative more quickly. The use of such a shorthand is not limited to genre films (although frequently used there) and also extends the depiction of gender roles. Films often rely on certain preconceptions of gender, thereby also entrenching the very same standards.

Although Jurassic World is a fairly recent movie, it harkens back to classical adventures films, using a gender binary: Owen stands for masculinity/nature/coolness, while Claire stands for femininity/civilization/emotion. This mirrors adventure couples from films such as African Queen (1950), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) and Romancing the Stone (1984). When fending off the raptors in tandem, their actions are “traditionally” gendered: Claire screams and shows signs of panic, while Owen does not show any sign of emotion, remaining cool and calm. Even the choice of vehicles is gendered. Claire drives a truck, which oftentimes carries the connotation of being a masculine activity, which can be read as a slight subversion of gender roles. But Owen, swooping in on a motorcycle and saving the day, stills comes across as the “traditionally” masculine hero.
