<p>This module intends to expand your understanding of filmic presentations, especially of the colonised and marginalised, media representations of colonised and stereotyped impressions and experiences of minority or ‘other’ groups. It is intended to get you thinking about different, innovative and collaborative ways of contributing to decolonisation in and through film studies and filmmaking.</p>
<p>The aim of this module is to make you aware of the social responsibility of filmmakers and how through films and film criticism, knowledge of people and groups can be decolonised. The objective of the module is to bring about a change, create new ideas, impressions and knowledge. You are encouraged to inquire into why certain representations persist and why others have evolved, and what could/should be done, through scholarship and practice, to change negative narrative. Critical to this course will be the role and place of colonialism and colonial understandings and portrayals of a people and how these have continued to shape how they are perceived and represented.</p>

<p><strong><em>Author</em></strong></p>
<p><em><strong><a href="https://www.futurefilm.education/the-team/ezinne-ezepue" target="[object Object]">Ezinne Ezepue</a></strong> is a lecturer of film at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. She has a BA (Nigeria) in Theatre & Film Studies, MA (Birmingham) in Film & TV and a PhD (Birmingham) in Media Studies. She has researched Nollywood extensively and is published in books and journals. She is currently researching African storytelling and how folk narratives can be harnessed for sustainable development. Her interest in film stems from the medium’s potential to inspire and model a new identity and unseat stereotypes. Ezinne is interested in stories that are authentically African. In addition to being an African film scholar and critic, Ezinne has critical interest in documentary filmmaking.</em></p>
