While queer cinema thrives as a genre on its own, there are other genres that invite queer readings / queer interpretations.

Examples include:

The horror film is often centered on bodies and sexualities, which sometimes lie outside the norm; however, some films have been called out by queer activists for portraying LGBTQI+ as a source for monstrosity and murderous intent, in films such as Dressed to Kill (1980) and The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Genres that showcase (bodily) closeness among same-sex groups, including the war film, the buddy movie and the “chick flick”, have invited queer readings

Science fiction and fantasy are often centered on possible worlds that deviate from our concepts of society, but also from bodily norms, fixed identities and normative sexualities. Even a blockbuster such as Avatar (2009), in which the protagonists have sex by connecting their hair instead of other organs, can be read as queer in this regard

Musicals often create a hyperreal world in which anything is possible and the genre is therefore often read as a queer one, even though heterosexual romances prevail

The melodrama as a filmic mode is often defined by excess in imagery, sound and mise-en-scene, while usually dealing with the conflict between an individual’s desires and society’s constraints, thereby allowing a potential for queer readings of these films, even when the on-screen characters are heterosexual

Assignment: Watch the following clip from 22 Jump Street (2014). In the movie, the buddy cops Morton Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Greg Jenko (Channing Tatum) go undercover at a college, in order to catch a mysterious drug dealer. In the process, their work relationship becomes strained and they visit a (couples) therapist.
